FAQ
Where does the data I see on the platform come from?
All individual members of the ASMP who refine or transform precious metals upload their data directly. The platform then aggregates this information.
Who verifies the reliability of the data?
All refineries are subject to strict regulations and oversight regarding the precious metals they process. You can learn more about this in the “Discover” section of the platform.
The federal Precious Metals Control Office also has access to the data submitted by ASMP members in order to conduct its checks.
How often is the data uploaded?
Data is uploaded on an annual basis.
The data I see on the website for gold does not match the official import statistics. Why is this?
This is correct. The platform displays data relating exclusively to ASMP member refineries.
By contrast, Swiss customs data cover imports carried out by all companies operating in Switzerland, regardless of whether they are ASMP members. This difference explains the discrepancies observed between the platform’s data and the official customs statistics.
How do you define high-risk Countries?
The list of “high-risk countries” adopted by the SPMTP is aligned with the one used by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). While the list might evolve in the future, the adoption of the same list ensures consistency with international practice and supports comparability.
What counterparts are included in the platform?
The platform shows data for the counterparties with whom refineries have a contractual relationship. This includes information on primary gold suppliers, including mines, as well as co-contracting partners involved in secondary gold sourcing in higher-risk areas.
Why the suppliers of primary gold are not always mines?
The platform shows data for the counterparties with whom refineries have a contractual relationship. In some cases, refineries source primary gold through authorized intermediaries, such as traders or aggregators, rather than directly from mining companies. Counterparts may also include other refineries or central banks sending gold to Switzerland for refining. Independently from their nature, all counterparts are subject to due diligence requirements under internationally recognized responsible sourcing standards.
Suppliers or counterparts?
Refineries offer a refining service. Therefore, and although their counterparts are often referred to as suppliers, they should be considered as clients.
However, in order to stick to the language mostly used by the public, we may refer to suppliers to facilitate the understanding of flows by the general public.
